In England, audiences have long been divided among Coronation Street, Emerdale, and Eastenders, among other programs largely indistinguishable from afar. Still, the pervasive Englishness of Canada does not quite account for the breadth of Coronation Street ’s nationwide popularity. Besides which, there are simply a great many Canadians of an English background or heritage: 20 per cent of households in this country regard themselves as British, according to Statistics Canada, and the exodus of Britons seeking prosperity in this country over the course of the 20th century means an enormous number of families have meaningful ties to England, and would obviously find something appealing about a drama immersed there so authentically. We’re a commonwealth country: there’s always been a certain natural cultural affinity between Canada and Great Britain, and our national identity is bound up in the motherland’s rather inextricably. According to the CBC, nearly 800,000 Canadians tune in to Coronation Street every evening in prime time. What’s more, it has been wildly successful. In one form or another, on whichever channel, Coronation Street has been available for English ex-patriots and spiritual Britons in Canada now for more than 50 years. The show has aired in this country almost since the very beginning: a batch of the show’s first 260 episodes were bought from ITV by the CBC in the spring of 1966, while other voluminous multi-season bundles went on to be acquired by networks such as CTV and CBKST through the 1970s and 1980s. Less obvious, perhaps, is how popular Coronation Street has been here, in Canada – and indeed how popular in Canada Coronation Street continues to be.
